Regardless of the setback, he owes a great deal to both Solskjaer and Rangnick for allowing him to make his international debut while still a youngster, but he also owes a great deal to his own hard work.
A shoulder injury in January 2021 seemed to be the end of his season, but he was recovered in time to excel for the under-23s thanks to nearly compulsive recovery regimen, which included frequent cryotherapy treatments. Then, when Solskjaer needed to promote players from the academy to make room for senior players in the Europa League final against Villarreal, Elanga was chosen. He scored in a 2-1 victory against Wolves on the last day of the Premier League season.
After his late-season league appearance, he was given the opportunity to spend preseason with the first team, including a substitute appearance versus QPR. Over the summer, he also worked with a private coach to increase his strength and fitness; at the start of the season, club personnel had noticed that he was running quicker and leaping higher. Thierry Henry was his childhood idol, and there’s more than a touch of the France legend in the way he plays.

United U23 head coach Neil Wood told ESPN, “You can see his improvement and his passion, mindset, and ambition to get into the main squad.” “Since he came through the door, it’s been the same. It’s pleasant to see him play football because he’s a modest, hardworking young man. Everyone is pleased of what he has accomplished so far. He recognizes that there is still potential for improvement.
“It demonstrates that if you’re ready to put in the effort and come in with the appropriate mindset and philosophy, there is a path upward and a route into the first team for you.”
“There are a lot of things you have to do once you get there to remain there, but he sets a fantastic example for the other young players. He’s one of our homegrown guys to be proud of, and he sets the bar high. It’s incredible to see what he’s accomplished in the previous few weeks. That’s something we’re quite proud of.”
United have nine games to rescue their season and ensure a spot in the top four after a demoralizing derby loss at Manchester City and a Champions League elimination to Atletico Madrid, and it would be no surprise to see Elanga given a major position. His ascension is quickly becoming one of the few bright spots in an otherwise dreadful campaign. There are many unanswered questions hanging over Old Trafford, but the future seems bright for Elanga.
