‘I Don’t Think I’m Ready for This’

When the world is so full of change, it can be hard to know where to start. But even if you’re not ready for a complete overhaul in your life yet, there are ways that you can work with what’s changing and make changes as they come.

“i think i’m ready for you honestly i do” is a song by the pop band “5 Seconds of Summer.” It’s about how the singer doesn’t want to get into a relationship, but he knows that it will happen eventually.

You’d never guess Scottie Scheffler had any doubts after seeing him slog around Augusta National Golf Club on Sunday and skillfully finish out the 2022 Masters Tournament for his first career major victory. The 25-year-old kept his emotions in check throughout the day, playing smart, error-free golf, and not cracking until the last putt on 18.

However, Scheffler confessed after donning his new green jacket that the morning before his Sunday tee time he was a nervous mess. He “cried like a baby” as dread and uncertainty overtook him, and Scheffler may not be a Masters winner today if it weren’t for his wife, Meredith.

Before the final round at The Masters, Scottie Scheffler “cried like a baby.”

On Saturday night, Scheffler slept with the green jacket halfway over his shoulders. Cameron Smith was three strokes behind him, and Sungjae Im was still in contention at five shots down, but no one else in the field was inside six going into the fourth round.

Scheffler was the favorite to win the Masters.

But sleeping with a lead on the PGA Tour, particularly at Augusta, Georgia, is never easy. The pressure eventually struck Scheffler when he awakened hours before his final-round tee time.

In his post-tournament news conference, he said, “I sobbed like a baby this morning.” “I was in a lot of pain. I was at a loss for what to do. ‘I don’t believe I’m ready for this,’ I told [my wife] Meredith as I sat there. I’m not ready, I don’t feel ready for this kind of thing, and I’m simply overwhelmed.’

Scheffler is fortunate in that he has a wife who knows just what to say.

“‘Who are you to say you aren’t ready?’ she said. “Who am I to claim to know what is best for my life?” According to Scheffler. “So we spoke about how God is in charge and how the Lord is directing me, and if this is my day, it is my time.” And if I hit 82 today, I was going to utilize it for His glory in some way.

“Wow, it was an exhausting morning.”

When Scheffler got at Augusta National, though, the game was on.

He overcame his anxieties to win his first major championship.

Before the most nerve-wracking tee time of his life, Scheffler experienced a moment of weakness, but he brushed it off and played the round of his life on the greatest platform in golf.

The Texan grinded off a gritty par after hitting his opening tee shot into the left woods, giving him the confidence to assault Augusta National. He saw Smith make two birdies right away to trim his lead to one, but he responded with a chip-in birdie on the third hole to reclaim his three-shot margin.

On the front nine, five consecutive pars and another birdie on 7 culminated in a 2-under par 34.

Scheffler responded from his first bogey of the day on 10 with three consecutive pars and birdies on 14 and 15 to extend his lead to five. After then, it was only a formality. Scheffler won the 2022 Masters by three strokes with a final-round 71. If you exclude his uncommon four-putt on 18 when the event was already won, he had four birdies and just one bogey on Sunday.

No one would have suspected Scheffler ever questioned himself if he hadn’t informed the world about his apprehensive morning.

Scheffler had previously won three of his previous five PGA Tour appearances on route to becoming the world’s No. 1 golfer, but nothing compares to winning the Masters for the first time.

“If I had to choose a golf event to win, this would be the one I would pick,” he stated. “You never know how many opportunities you’ll have.” And so having a chance, you know, I believe I had a five-shot lead on Friday and then a three-shot lead heading into today, I don’t think you get many better chances than that. “You don’t want to throw them away.”

He didn’t, and as a result, he’ll be remembered as a Masters champion for the rest of his life.
