Sierra Vista and Twin Cities Earn Top Grade in Patient Safety from The Leapfrog Group •

In recent years, the federal government has been trying to focus on improving safety in health care. The Leapfrog Group recognized that there is a need for these improvements and awarded Sierra Vista Hospital with its “Gold Standard” award for excellence in patient safety.

Since 2012, Sierra Vista has been one of just 23 hospitals in the country to obtain a “A” rating in every reporting period.

SAN LUIS OBISPO/TEMPLETON — Tenet Health Central Coast’s Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center and Twin Cities Community Hospital both received a “A” grade in the Fall 2021 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade, a national distinction recognizing Tenet Health Central Coast’s achievements in protecting patients from errors, injuries, accidents, and infections.

The Leapfrog Group is a non-profit national watchdog dedicated to improving the quality and safety of health care.

Sierra Vista has received consecutive A’s in every reporting period since the ratings were first released in 2012 — just 23 hospitals worldwide have received consecutive A’s in the 20 reporting cycles since 2012.

“This honor demonstrates that, no matter what obstacles we encounter – whether it’s a rise from Covid-19 variations, personnel shortages, or supply chain issues – our employees prioritize patient safety,” said Mark Lisa, CEO of Tenet Health Central Coast.

“It is exactly this dedication to safety that permits and empowers the County’s Trauma Center, level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), the region’s first Advanced Thrombectomy-capable Center for stroke treatment, the County’s sole hospital-based Wound Care Clinic, and more.”

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is the only hospital assessment system that focuses only on preventing medical mistakes and patient damage. The grading system is open to the public, peer-reviewed, and completely transparent. The autumn and spring grades are revised twice a year.

The Hospital Safety Grade is intended to provide customers with information that will help them make informed healthcare choices for themselves or a loved one. The Leapfrog Group gives hospitals around the nation A, B, C, D, or F ratings based on their capacity to reduce mistakes, injuries, accidents, and infections.

The Leapfrog Group’s President and CEO, Leah Binder, remarked, “Tenet Health Central Coast has made a clear and consistent commitment to safeguard patients from harm.”

“During times of crisis, establishing and sustaining procedures that improve patient safety is extremely important. I am appreciative to Tenet Health Central Coast’s leadership and employees for their ongoing commitment to patient safety.”

The Leapfrog Group’s Background

The Leapfrog Group is a nationwide nonprofit organization that was founded in 2000 by big employers and other buyers to drive a movement for enormous leaps ahead in the quality and safety of American health care. The Leapfrog Hospital Survey and the new Leapfrog Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC) Survey gather and openly report hospital and ASC performance, allowing buyers to select the best-value care and providing consumers with life-saving information. Leapfrog’s second major endeavor, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade, offers letter grades to hospitals based on their patient safety records, assisting customers in protecting themselves and their families against mistakes, injuries, accidents, and infections.
